God bestowed on man the capacity to help the living beings. It is not only our capability but it is our responsibility too. Helping others is the best of the human Dharma. If one bird gets trapped, many birds flock around it and attract the attention of others so that the trapped bird may be released and saved.

Today, as the world observes World Hygiene Day and World Menstrual Hygiene Day, YMCA Liberia joins global and local partners to reaffirm our commitment to advancing personal hygiene and menstrual health as fundamental human rights. This year’s observance aligns with the implementation of the Protect, Empower, Nurture (PEN) project, a vital initiative designed to harness the full potential of adolescent girls in Liberia. Funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the PEN project is being implemented across Montserrado, River Cess, and Grand Gedeh counties.
Ending Period Poverty, Promoting Hygiene Dignity
Menstrual health remains a pressing challenge in Liberia. Approximately 30% of women and girls lack access to basic menstrual products and are forced to rely on unsafe alternatives like cloth, newspapers, or leaves—compromising their health and dignity. The lack of affordable sanitary pads and adequate sanitation facilities exacerbates school absenteeism, with many girls missing up to five days of school each month. This deepens gender inequality and limits their opportunities for education and empowerment.
